"Jewels of the Sea"

Janice Freischlag’s passion is to bring life to her art with color, style and textures that stimulate all the senses.  The artist, who works in a variety of media, will be featured in March at the Sutter Creek Gallery. 

Freischlag began with German folk art painting while living for five years in Germany.  After returning to the U.S. she broadened her painting skills.  As she became more proficient, she started getting commissions to paint pets and other subjects.  When painting portraits, Freischlag prefers oils because of the slower drying time.

“When I need vibrant, electric colors, I use gouache as a medium.”  Landscapes and seascapes are often created in acrylics.  She generally paints from photographs because of the convenience and ability to edit the content.  The artist continuously challenges herself to find more difficult subjects to capture on canvas.

“After I’ve finished a particularly complex painting, the feeling of accomplishment can be so encouraging.  I look at some of the work I’ve painted over the last 27 years and I’m amazed at what I’ve achieved.”

"Birds and Blooms" is the theme at Gallery 10 in March

The artists at Gallery 10 invite you to a celebration of spring with a display of paintings by member and consignment artists during the month of March.  Many of our artists create works that show a love of birds and flowers.

You will see paintings in various mediums, including oil paintings by Sue Smith and Marilyn Eger, watercolors by Stella Stevens, Joanne Dedge and Julie Trail, collage by Catherine Woodruff, etchings by Susan Hayne, porcelain jewelry by Katherine Finn, pottery with a floral motif by Margaret Kunzler, and much more!

The selection of beautiful items is delightful!  Be sure to come by for a visit, find a gift for a friend, and enjoy the variety of art.

The show will be on display all month, with a reception on Saturday, March 4, 2-5 P.M. at Gallery 10, 15 Eureka St., Sutter Creek.  The gallery is open Thursday-Monday, 11-4.

Crocker Art Auction - Submissions due March 16

If you’ve ever wanted one of your paintings hanging in the Crocker, here’s your chance.  There are two auctions coming up this Spring, at least one of which is juried.

We are pleased to announce the Crocker Art Museum’s 39th annual Art Auction Season. The Crocker’s Big Names, Small Art (BNSA) and Art Auction are the region’s preeminent art events, attracting sell-out audiences of art collectors and aficionados. The incredible draw and success of these events can be attributed to the outstanding, high-quality art provided by select, talented regionally and nationally recognized artists. We hope you will consider supporting the Crocker by submitting art to one or both of these events. The Art Auction will be held Saturday, June 3. The event features over 120 artworks in both silent and live auctions and is the not-to-be-missed evening for those in the Sacramento region who care about the visual arts. One of the hallmarks of Art Auction is that it strives to present a wide range of outstanding quality artwork. Please submit an image of one of your works. Due to space considerations, submissions may not exceed 40” in width. If this piece is selected, it will be entered in either the silent or live auction. Minimum bids will be based on the fair market value you set. As a participating artist, your work will be prominently featured in the Art Auction catalog and on the Museum’s website. All Art Auction items will also be included in a special exhibition at the Crocker on view from May 18 through June 3, 2016. You will be invited to Big Names, Small Art on May 18, the official launch of Art Auction season (includes complimentary admission and two drink tickets). The Crocker endeavors to support artists and, as always, provides the option for you to receive 50% of the proceeds from the sale of your work. If you would like to donate 100% of the sale proceeds to the Museum you will receive recognition in the collector’s Art Auction catalog and a complimentary Museum membership (Family level includes two adults and all children under 18), plus your additional support strengthens the Crocker’s ability to promote an awareness of and enthusiasm for human experience through art. Big Names, Small Art (BNSA) will be held Thursday evening, May 18. This event features a silent auction of small-scale art (all pieces are 12”x12” or less). All bids begin at $25 regardless of the work’s market value. This low entry bid creates an environment of fast-paced, friendly competition. One hundred percent (100%) of the proceeds from sales of BNSA art benefits the Crocker Art Museum’s education programs and exhibitions. Participating BNSA artists are invited to attend BNSA as guests of the Museum with complimentary entrance and drink tickets for two. We hope you will join us to enjoy this festive party and meet the patrons purchasing your work. The Crocker Art Museum’s Art Auction Season is a highly anticipated Sacramento tradition. Both BNSA and Art Auction enjoy broad exposure and provide excellent opportunities to attract collectors. The success of the auctions depends on the generosity of artists, like you, whose support allows the Crocker Art Museum to continue to connect people in unexpected ways with art, ideas, each other and the world around them.
