January at Gallery 10: "Art Again"

Gallery 10 celebrates the new year with a sale of recycled, repurposed art. Paintings that have been rotated out of first owners’ collections will be offered at substantially reduced prices. 

There will be art supplies galore, some brand new and unused, others slightly used, all with value to artists looking for something to add to their trove and to beginners who are treading softly before making a big investment in supplies.

Paintings, artwork, brushes, paint, easels, canvases, frames. Gallery 10 will be having a Studio Sale Extraordinaire during the month of January!

All are welcome to a reception on Saturday, January 8, 2-5 PM. Browse the eclectic selection of recycled, repurposed art and supplies. Enjoy good company, snacks and a sip of wine or punch.  Join us as we wish everyone a Happy New Year!

January at Sutter Creek Gallery: Ree McLaughlan Brown

One thing you can expect from Ree McLaughlan Brown is that she will create something unexpected.  It might be a surprising painting surface or the materials she uses for her art.  McLaughlan Brown will be featured throughout the month of January at the Sutter Creek Gallery.  Due to the New Year holiday, the opening reception for her exhibition will be held Saturday, January 8, from 2 to 5 pm. 

McLaughlan Brown paints expressive art in various media: alcohol ink and resin, encaustic wax, cold wax and oil, powders, gold leaf and acrylics. Unexpected surfaces include mineral paper, exotic wood, aluminum, glass, and everything in sight!  The most unusual surfaces are granite and marble on which a tractor blade carves rugged edges into the stone.  Then the artist uses a sandblaster, air, knives, and metal implements to move the paint, wax and inks which shape the art.  In addition to viewing her work at the gallery, it is also on display at local venues through the Art in Public Places program, sponsored by the Amador County Artists Association, and on her website, www.reemclaughlanbrown.ART.   

Following retirement from 38 years in state service, McLaughlan Brown paints out of her rural art studio on five acres above Jackson.  In the past year, she painted daily and many of her new works are on exhibit.  She explains that motion dominates her work “which dances with uplifting emotion and vivid color.  My paintings speak to me and tell me their perfect titles.”  The artist is motivated to make a difference with her art by contributing artwork for local charitable events.

December at Sutter Creek Gallery: "The Inkist" Kirk Neiberger

 Kirk Neiberger calls himself The Inkist because black ink is the primary medium for his art, although he might add a dab of color for a highlight.  As a young man, the artist fell in love with etchings but could not afford the necessary supplies.  So, he decided that the next best substitute was pen and ink drawing.  Upon retiring as a trial lawyer, he reconnected with this second love, creating art through his pen, ink and watercolor.  Neiberger will be featured at Sutter Creek Gallery during the month of December.  The exhibition opens on Saturday, December 4, with a reception from 2 to 5 p.m.

Most of Neiberger’s work is from his own photos, which he shoots at home and abroad during what he calls “photo safaris.”  He particularly loves to interpret local images and scenes, both historical and common place.  There is nothing more satisfying to the self-taught artist than having a stranger connect with one of his drawings to the point of buying it to take home or give as a gift.  “As I get older, I truly like the idea of my art getting out into the world and being enjoyed by others,” he said.  “It’s a legacy that will certainly outlive me, and I find that quite appealing.”

December at Sutter Creek Gallery: Gallery Artist Show

Having trouble coming up with the perfect gift for family and friends?  Come into Sutter Creek Gallery and browse one-of-a-kind art gifts at affordable prices.  For December, the gallery’s artists have been creating art pieces under $50, and many will be well below that price.  Paintings large and small in acrylics, watercolors, pastels, encaustics, and oils.  Collages and mixed media pieces from teeny-tiny to sizable.  Photographs, fabric wall hangings, hand-painted glassware, ceramics, gourds, sculptures, and so much more. 

We’ve just lost our lease and have to vacate by early February. While we are looking for a new location, December and January will be the last months to see our recently refurbished gallery. And the perfect opportunity to pick up a memorable piece of art for those special people in your life as well as for yourself.

Our first Saturday reception will be held on Tuesday, December 7, starting at 2 p.m.  However, the selection of gifts will be available from December 1. December at Gallery 10: Characters in Abstract - Dave Manousos

My name is Dave Manousos. I am a fine artist living in Northern California Gold Country. Known for my bold brushwork and colorful interpretations of everyday life represented in the faces of my characters,

I consider my style modern with a pop twist.

The bright color scheme defines the pop aspect of my artwork; however, the expressions of my subjects often take the piece out of the tropey pop space and move it into a subversive and serious space.

Most of my character paintings have dual personalities competing in a single space. When viewing one of my paintings, take your hand and cover one side of the piece then do the same on the other side. You will see two different emotions or expressions existing cohesively in the same space.

Over the past 35 years I have experimented with many techniques of painting and illustrating. I have written and illustrated children’s books, worked in graphic design and continued to paint.

My current Big Eye Collection is a compilation of character paintings that combine both my illustration and painting techniques. As I apply layer after layer of color and texture, I see shapes and faces emerge from the canvas. I embrace the dominant figure and bring it to life.

Dave will show his work at Gallery 10, 15 Eureka St., Sutter Creek, during the month of December.  A reception will be held in Dave’s honor on Saturday, December 4, 2-5 P.M. Everyone is invited to meet Dave, see his amazing and original display of paintings, and enjoy a bite to eat.  The show will hang all of December.
