April at Sutter Creek Gallery: "Celebrating Spring"

Sutter Creek Gallery is “Celebrating Spring” with its April show.  Warmer weather brings budding trees and colorful blossoms.  Daffodils and California poppies dot the landscape.  Shrubs and grapevines awaken and sprout leaves. Gallery members have been invited to submit artwork marking the season.  A reception to open the show will be held on Saturday April 2, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Now is a good time to head outdoors and breathe in the new sights and scents.  It is also a good time to stroll through Sutter Creek Gallery to see the unique pieces created by members to celebrate the theme.  On display will be florals and landscapes, birds and other animals, jewelry, ceramics and more.  The gallery is known for its affordable prices as well as the best place for custom matting and framing.

Please join us on April 2 to view the spring show and browse the displays of the 21 member artists at 40 Main Street, Sutter Creek.  The gallery is open Thursday through Monday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  For additional information, call 209-267-0228, email suttercreekgallery@gmail.com, or visit www.suttercreekgallery.com.

April at Gallery 10: Jeannie Vodden, "Whimsy in Color and Black & White"

Whimsy in Color and Black and White

Artwork by Jeannie Vodden

Jeannie Vodden's watercolors are full of layered color and life.  Her drawings are whimsically charming.
You are invited to come into her curious little garden-world during the month of April at Gallery 10.

“My interest in the variety of textures and patterns found in both natural and man-made objects is quite often the starting point for my paintings and drawings.  Adding natural light creates a sense of volume.  With a figure and a dash of fantasy, we have a little visual story.  I’m a big lover of the representational as well as the fantasy realms … So, in this show, you will see a mixture of each”

Jeannie’s preference for the complex play of form and light is balanced by her use of a very simple palette.  Starting with only three colors, she glazes many transparent watercolor layers.   Each layer modifies the last, changing the color and adding a multi-leveled glow.   Though the process takes some patience, the visual effects are revealed in an unusual depth of color… well suited for transparent watercolor.

And…In the last several years Jeannie has broadened her repertoire with some charming pencil drawings …a series called The Unseen Folk.  Interestingly, the techniques she uses in her drawings mirror those of her watercolor.  However, instead of color, she is layering light to dark graphite.

Jeannie is a popular instructor of watercolor.  She has taught workshops throughout California and in Wyoming and Washington State for over 20 years.  She enjoys demonstrating her watercolor techniques to art and community organizations and finds the challenge of judging art competitions rewarding and inspiring.

She has shown her work in galleries and businesses throughout California, including the Crocker Art Museum, the Haggin Museum, the Orland Art Center, Gallery at 48 Natoma, Double Dip Gallery and many others. Her work has won many awards and has been published in a number of publications including Pratique des Art Magazine in France and Artist Palette Magazine in Australia, and in 2021 in Splash 22, a watercolor magazine celebrating fine watercolor art.

In 2020 she was awarded signature status at the California Watercolor Association.
Annually she has participated in the Amador County Art Studio Tours.
Jeannie designs a theme fair window at the Amador County Fair in Plymouth, CA each year for the Amador Stars, the local Cancer support organization.
For 2010, 11 and 14 wine release she designed unique and beautiful fine art wine labels for Young’s Vineyard in the Shenandoah Valley, California.

You are invited to a reception for Jeannie at Gallery 10, 15 Eureka St., Sutter Creek, on Saturday, April 2, 2-5 P.M. Her show will hang all of April.  Gallery hours are Thursday-Monday, 11-5.  209-267-0203, Gallery10.org.

March at Gallery 10: "Landscapes"

Gallery 10 offers the community a wonderful collection of landscapes from our many skilled artists in a variety of media.  Bruce Hancock paints almost exclusively in oil and has developed his talent for fine painting after retiring from a successful career as an architectural engineer. His landscapes of the foothills and delta are highly sought after by collectors.

Steve Holler has been painting landscapes using acrylic paint since he retired as a teacher of graphic arts at the California Art Institute, Sacramento.  His paintings are vivid with deep rich colors.

Patricia Prendergast uses pastel to express her love of the local landscape in our Northern California neighborhood.

Julie Trail and Marleen Olive love to paint the landscape in watercolor.  Julie’s watercolors of the mountains and foothills surrounding Sutter Creek are an expression of her love of the outdoors. Marleen enjoys adding collage to her watercolor expressions of landscape.

Wendy Rogers also uses watercolor to express her love of landscape. Vineyards and forests, foothills and river passages all draw the viewer into the beauty that surrounds us.

Brent Parsons shares his landscapes done in etchings, wonderfully skillful representations of our local area.

Other artists also create landscapes from time to time, so stop by Gallery 10  and see the offerings for this March show of the skill and inspiration exhibited by our local artists.

Visit Gallery 10 during the reception to be held on Saturday, March 5, 11-5, enjoy a quaff and a nibble with the artists we are so very proud to represent.  The show will be hanging all of March, so please take time to stop by and see these beautiful paintings.

March at Sutter Creek Gallery: Watercolor artist Jo Ann Ogburn

Watercolor artist Jo Ann Ogburn understands the importance of observation in the creative process.  “Painting has taught me to really look at things in nature, to see the colors, shapes, values and textures,” she explains.  The artist lives on a sizable parcel in Pioneer which provides her with ample opportunities for observing the landscape.  She will be the featured artist in March at the Sutter Creek Gallery.

Ogburn has had a varied career. With a degree in Education from the University of Cincinnati, she taught elementary students.  She has worked in Human Resources and as a recruiter for various corporations.  After a move to the California Bay Area, she studied painting, working originally in oils, but eventually settling on watercolors as her preferred medium. She continues her artistic education taking a wide variety of workshops, most recently at the Crocker Art Museum.  She plans to teach more workshops and classes of her own in watercolor.

Strong colors and contrasts are important as evidenced by the play between highlights and shadows in many of her works.  Inspired by nature and her surroundings, Ogburn paints primarily florals, animals and landscapes.  Along with her paintings, she produces an extensive line of cards.  She is a member of the Amador County Artists Association and the subgroup, Art in Public Places, exhibiting in various commercial businesses around the county.  She has been an active member of the Sutter Creek Gallery over the past five years.  Additionally, she offers her work at Made in Amador, the Jackson Paint Spot, and Payless IGA Market in Pioneer.

Sutter Creek Gallery invites you to spend some time with Jo Ann Ogburn at her reception on Saturday, March 5, from 2 to 5 pm.  She is one of twenty local artists exhibiting at the Sutter Creek Gallery, 40 Main Street, in the heart of Sutter Creek. Besides original paintings and photography, the gallery offers affordable prints, cards, jewelry, pottery, gourds and fiber arts as well as framing services. The gallery is open Thursday through Monday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.  For additional information, call 209-267-0228, email suttercreekgallery@gmail.com, or visit www.suttercreekgallery.com.
