Watercolor artist Jo Ann Ogburn understands the importance
of observation in the creative process. “Painting has taught me to really
look at things in nature, to see the colors, shapes, values and
textures,” she explains. The artist lives on a sizable parcel in Pioneer
which provides her with ample opportunities for observing the landscape. She
will be the featured artist in March at the Sutter Creek Gallery.
Ogburn has had a varied career. With a degree in Education from the University of Cincinnati, she taught elementary students. She has worked in Human Resources and as a recruiter for various corporations. After a move to the California Bay Area, she studied painting, working originally in oils, but eventually settling on watercolors as her preferred medium. She continues her artistic education taking a wide variety of workshops, most recently at the Crocker Art Museum. She plans to teach more workshops and classes of her own in watercolor.
Strong colors and contrasts are important as evidenced by the play between highlights and shadows in many of her works. Inspired by nature and her surroundings, Ogburn paints primarily florals, animals and landscapes. Along with her paintings, she produces an extensive line of cards. She is a member of the Amador County Artists Association and the subgroup, Art in Public Places, exhibiting in various commercial businesses around the county. She has been an active member of the Sutter Creek Gallery over the past five years. Additionally, she offers her work at Made in Amador, the Jackson Paint Spot, and Payless IGA Market in Pioneer.
Sutter Creek Gallery invites you to spend some time with Jo Ann Ogburn at her reception on Saturday, March 5, from 2 to 5 pm.
