Two artists, Judy Regnier and Cynthia Dunn-Selph, featured at Sutter Creek Gallery in January

Two artists who recently joined the Sutter Creek Gallery cooperative are uniting for an exhibition in January.  Both Cynthia Dunn-Selph and Judy Regnier have been creating art for a good part of their lives.  Yet their experiences and media are very different.  The public is invited to meet these talented artists at a reception in their honor on Saturday, January 16, from 4 to 7 p.m.  The exhibition, however, will be on display throughout the month.
Judy Regnier is a watercolor artist who has been painting for 40 years.  She studied in both Illinois and Florida to obtain a degree in nursing.  Moving to the Bay area, she worked as a nurse and studied painting beginning with oils and acrylics.  After retiring and relocating to Northern California in 1990, she tried her hand at watercolors, which she considered a more challenging medium.

“The fun is watching what happens when the colors and water flow together and change on the paper,” she discovered as this can produce unexpected results.  Regnier continues to be excited about painting scenes from the Mother Lode.

"Icy Trees" - Judy Regnier

"Bringin' the Christmas Tree" - Judy Regnier

The child of artists, Cynthia Dunn-Selph has been creating art all of her life.  She works in many mediums, including acrylics, oil pastels, encaustic, and photography, often combining these into assemblages and mixed media art. Her passion is to merge and combine different techniques to create something unique, extending her knowledge of a material, and then pushing the boundaries of that material. She has taught classes to children and adults, focusing on the aspects of process and play rather than just technique as she believes we are all artists in need of an outlet for our creativity.  Currently, Dunn-Selph teaches art classes in Pioneer at Wendy Ward's Creative Studio.

"Autumn Tree"  - Cynthia Dunn-Selph

"Winter Forest 1" - Cynthia Dunn-Selph

Regnier and Dunn-Selph are two of the local artists exhibiting at the cooperative located in the heart of Sutter Creek at 35 Main Street.  Besides original paintings and photographs, the gallery offers many affordable items including prints, cards, jewelry, gourds and fiber arts.  The gallery is open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  For additional information, call 209-267-0228, email suttercreekgallery@gmail.com, or visit www.suttercreekgallery.com.

Laurie Williams is Sutter Creek Gallery's Featured Artist for November - Reception on Nov 7

Laurie Williams’ love of animals shines through in her art, consisting of both paintings and sculptures. Sutter Creek Gallery’s featured artist for November grew up on a ranch where she observed both domestic and wild animals. These became the focus of her work.  Williams has exhibited throughout Northern California. Most recent shows include exhibitions at the Art Council Gallery in Sutter Creek, Outside Art in Lockeford, and the September Phantom Gallery in Martell.
Williams was inspired by the great colorists—Gauguin, Van Gogh, the Fauves and the German expressionists—while studying art at Sonoma and Humboldt State Universities and the San Francisco Art Institute. Because of these influences, her bold-colored paintings depict deer, horses, goats and other creatures surrounded by vivid, sometimes abstract, designs. In addition to paintings, the show will feature clay sculptures of animals, some of which are vividly colored and others in neutral hues.
The gallery invites you to meet Laurie Williams at the reception in her honor on Saturday, November 7, from 4 to 7 p.m., as part of the region's First Saturday Art Trek.  She is one of the local artists exhibiting at the cooperative located in the heart of Sutter Creek at 35 Main Street. Besides original paintings and photography, Sutter Creek Gallery offers many affordable items including prints, cards, jewelry, gourds and fiber arts. The gallery is open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call (209) 267-0228, email suttercreekgallery@gmail.com or visit www.suttercreekgallery.com.

A major event this month is Winefest on November 14. Sutter Creek stores will stay open late and wine tasting will be provided in the stores by area wineries. At Sutter Creek Gallery, co-op member Helen Wilkinson will be on hand to engrave souvenir wine glasses with the date.  Gallery members will also exhibit fall and vineyard scenes to celebrate this event.

Ted Smith is the featured artist at Gallery 10 for November; Reception on November 7

Ted Smith, featured artist for November at Gallery 10, uses vivid colors in acrylic, oil, watercolor, various papers and found objects to create paintings in abstract design.  Ted invites you to see his exhibit and join in the fun at his reception on Saturday, November 7, 2-5 P.M. at Gallery 10, 15 Eureka Street, Sutter Creek.  Appetizers, wine and punch will be served.
Ted paints on large canvases in bold colors and creates paintings that invite the interpretation of the viewer.  Recently Ted began experimenting with abstract images, and he has poured his creative energy into creating beautiful images depicting light on objects, shapes seen in his travels, lines and curves of everyday objects.  For years Ted painted local and distant scenes in an impressionistic style, and several of these representational paintings will also be part of his show.
Ted has been painting for the better part of his 79 years, beginning with scenes from his Monterey Bay birthplace.  He has lived in Amador County for 23 years and has won numerous awards at the Amador County Fair Art Show.  He shows his paintings with the Art in Public Places program, sponsored by the Amador County Artists Association, and in the Castle Oaks Clubrooms, in addition to being a member of Gallery 10.
In tangent with his painting, Ted is also an expert framer, working out of his workshop in his home near Sutter Creek.

Loretta Armstrong demonstration at October ACAA meeting included attention to detail

Loretta Armstrong demonstrated her unique style for the October 14 meeting of the Amador County Artists Association by painting a fall scene.  Loretta likes to paint big so she had completed the first steps prior to the meeting.  The canvas had been under painted—she doesn’t like working on a white surface—and the scene drawn in vine charcoal. She then fixes the charcoal strokes with an inexpensive hair spray.  When she applies additional layers of paint, some of the lines are allowed to show through.

Loretta works with oil paints and has an unusual way to keep them workable by adding a few drops of clove oil.  Also unusual, is her use of small brushes.  Loretta especially enjoys negative painting and demonstrated by working around the pine trees in the scene, which depicts a barn and outbuildings with a multitude of farm animals.  As she was unable to complete the piece because of the size of the canvas and the time frame for the demonstration, she said she would post it on our Facebook page when finished. www.facebook.com/AmadorArtists

Sutter Creek Gallery's Member Show for October: "Upcycling/Recycling"

Artists needn’t confine themselves to paint and brushes or pencils and sticks of color.  Sometimes they yearn to break out of the traditional mold and work with a different medium or take an artwork apart and form it into something else entirely.  Assemblages large and small are often created from discarded objects and collages can be made out of junk mail, photographs or old maps.  Art can be fashioned from unexpected materials as will be demonstrated by the members of Sutter Creek Gallery for their October show entitled “Upcycling/ Recycling.”
Since this show is in October, there will be seasonable images as well.  The colors of fall will be represented by autumn leaves and local scenes.  Halloween witches and pumpkins and black cats will also be in evidence to round out the show.  A reception will be held on Saturday, October 3, from 4 to 7 p.m., in conjunction with the region’s First Saturday Art Trek.
This cooperative of local artists is located in the heart of Sutter Creek at 35 Main Street.  Besides original paintings and photographs, Sutter Creek Gallery offers many affordable items including prints, cards, jewelry, gourds and fiber arts.  The gallery is open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  For additional information, call 209-267-0228, email suttercreekgallery@gmail.com, or visit www.suttercreekgallery.com

Gallery 10 presents Jeannie Vodden as October’s Featured Artist

Jeannie Vodden will be the featured artist at Gallery 10 during October.  Her paintings will hang at the gallery, 15 Eureka St., Sutter Creek, the whole month.  A reception to honor Jeannie will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2-5 P.M. and everyone is invited to attend, to meet Jeannie, to munch and sip, and to see the wonderful qualities of Jeannie’s paintings.

Jeannie Vodden is most versatile in watercolor.  She often starts with just three colors, and expands her palette only minimally as she develops a painting.  Jeannie paints portraits, still life, florals, landscapes and fantasy.   She loves to paint the complex textures, forms and patterns found in nature.

“I have been painting and drawing faces and portraits since I was very young.  From the first it was exciting, even surprising, to see a likeness appearing on the paper before me.”  She loves to bring a touch of fantasy into a painting.  Her glazing technique with color is well worth examining as you look at her work.

Be sure to stop at Gallery 10 on Oct. 3, or any time during the month, to see these wonderful works of art.  Jeannie Vodden lives in Jackson and loves to share her technique through demonstrations, workshops, and classes.

Jeannie Vodden

Jeannie Vodden's interest in the variety of textures and patterns found in both natural and man-made objects is the starting point for most of her paintings.  She adds natural light, sometimes a figure, occasionally a dash of fantasy, and pulls it all together with a limited palette.
Her preference for the complex play of form and light is balanced by her use of a very simple palette.  Starting with only three colors, and seldom using more than six, she glazes many transparent layers.   Each layer modifies the last, changing the color and adding a multi-leveled glow.   Though the process takes some patience, practice and understanding, the visual effects are revealed in an unusual feeling of depth of color.  The results are stunning and unique.
Jeannie is a popular instructor of watercolor.  She has taught workshops throughout California and in Wyoming and Washington State for 20 years.  She enjoys demonstrating her watercolor techniques to art and community organizations and finds the challenge of judging art competitions rewarding and inspiring.

She has shown her work in galleries and businesses in Sacramento, Lodi and Stockton and throughout California.

A few of her many awards and activities include:

·         Acceptance into National Watercolor Society 95th Exhibition 2015
·         Awards in the Stockton Art League’s competition at the Haggin Museum
·         Acceptance into the prestigious 2000 and 2002 Crocker Kingsley competition at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, Ca.
·         Awards at the “California Works” fine art competition at the California State Fair
·         Honorable Mentions at the KVIE Annual Art Auction
·         Many Best of Show and People’s Choice Awards
·         The State of California has purchased two of her paintings for its archives.

For years she demonstrated in the “California Works” Fine Art Show at the California State Fair, sharing her work and talking to visitors of the well-regarded fine art venue.

In the fall she opens her home studio to the public for the Amador County Art Studio Tours.

Jeannie designs a theme fair window at the Amador County Fair in Plymouth, CA each year for the Amador Stars, the local Cancer support organization.

For 2010 and 2011 and 2014 wine release she has designed unique and beautiful fine art wine labels for Young’s Vineyard in the Shenandoah Valley, California.

In 2015 Jeannie’s work was published in both Pratique des Art Magazine in France and Artist Palette Magazine in Australia.
