November at Sutter Creek Gallery: Oil Artist John Peck

John Peck has had a varied career. Following a 40-year stint in public service, his passion for
self-expression led him to art and oil painting. Born in Marin County, Peck followed many
family members into law enforcement where he received numerous awards and accolades
including the Gold Corrections Star for bravery. Peck will be the featured artist at
Sutter Creek Gallery during the month of November.

While recovering from knee surgery some years back, Peck took up sketching to pass the time.  Friends and family enjoyed his “little doodles” so much he put together a few books filled with drawings.  Increased interest led Peck to explore different art media until he discovered the beauty of oils. The self-taught artist paints landscapes, wildlife, still life and portraits.  As a lifelong backpacker and nature enthusiast, Peck captures his experiences in oil through his interpretive work with light and perspective. He is fervent about detail in his work as he believes that attention to the finest element brings an overall positive outcome.  This was demonstrated by his first-place award at the 2019 Amador County Fair in the professional division for oil/acrylic landscapes.

Peck is inspired by the works of John Singer Sargent along with the works of impressionists Renoir, Degas, and others.  Other sources of inspiration include current artists such as Michael James Smith and Mark Carder. One of Peck’s lifelong thrills was to get a personalized tour of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy, where the works of the Italian Renaissance were explicated.

Come meet John Peck at his reception on Saturday, November 2, beginning at 2 p.m. He is one of the many local artists exhibiting at the cooperative located in the heart of Sutter Creek at 35 Main Street. Besides original paintings and photography, the gallery offers numerous affordable items including prints, cards, jewelry, pottery, as well as gourd, glass and fiber arts. Framing and layaway services are also available.

The gallery is open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  For additional information, call 209-267-0228, email suttercreekgallery@gmail.com or visit www.suttercreekgallery.com
