February at Sutter Creek Gallery: Watercolors by Mary Sue Palmquist

Art and creativity have always played a big part in the life of Mary Sue Palmquist, Sutter Creek Gallery’s featured artist for February. She majored in art at Midwest colleges with concentrations in watercolor, printmaking and graphics (pre-computer age), attaining a BA in Art in 1982.

 Life, however, as it often does, took her in other directions. For twenty years, she worked in the performing arts sector as manager of a  historic movie theatre (Midway Theatre in Rockford, Illinois) and then as business manager for the Mendelssohn Performing Arts. During this time, Palmquist kept her creativity alive by studying calligraphy and Chinese brush painting. Her artistic journey led her to studying art therapy in Milwaukee and eventually working as an after-school arts teacher for the Rockford Area Arts Council.

In 2005, Palmquist moved to Lake Camanche where she’s been inspired by the beauty, history and uniqueness of the Gold Country.  She started painting again, most recently studying with Sabina Turner of Fiddletown. “The medium of watercolor, with its translucency and immediacy gives me a feeling of a mystery in the making,” Palmquist reflected.  A fascination with sea life and ancient creatures that inhabit the ocean has led to a series of paintings depicting jellyfish, octopuses, shells and other sea beings.  “Watercolor is the perfect medium to reveal the movement of these creatures.  I find it exciting to see how each image takes on a life of its own.  My intent is to impart a sense of wonder and joy through my paintings.”

February at Gallery 10: "Fur & Feathers"

“Fur and Feathers” will be an exciting theme for the February show at Gallery 10, 15 Eureka Street, Sutter Creek.  Members and Consignors will contribute paintings and other media, including clay figures, to celebrate the animals we love.  It may be pets, or it may be wildlife, all critters great and small are sure to find a place in the front space of Gallery 10.

A reception will be held on the first Saturday, February 3, during the Amador Art Trek, at Gallery 10, 2-4 P.M.  We look forward to the show and welcome everyone to enjoy it with us!

Gallery 10 is open Thursday-Monday, 11-4 , during the winter months.  “Fur and Feathers” will hang all month.

January at Sutter Creek Gallery: George Lambert

Given George Lambert's family background, it shouldn't have been surprising that he pursued art upon retirement. His parents and siblings painted, pottered, sculpted or worked in wood. George chose painting as his medium, expressing himself in oils, acrylics and watercolors. He will be the featured artist at Sutter Creek Gallery in January.

George enjoys experimenting with a variety of painting techniques including loose brushstrokes, vibrant colors and rich textures which result in an abstract impressionist style. Trying new things and exploring various artistic styles is an important part of the art experience that gives him the most pleasure.

George rarely makes use of typical drawing tools, such as pencil, pen or charcoal, to establish compositions. Instead, he dives right in and draws with a brush loaded with paint, giving his artwork freshness and a sense of spontaneity. His subjects include landscapes, seascapes and scenes with figures predominating.

The artist has exhibited at the Amador County Fair fine arts show and has received many awards, including three for Best of Show and multiple awards for First Place. In recent years, George's art has appeared in the KVIE public television fine arts auction. In 2015, his painting of the iconic Tower Bridge, "Sacramento Sparkle," received a Hewell Howser California Gold award. He has been a member of the Sutter Creek Gallery since its inception, and images of his work can be seen on his website, www.georgelambertart.com.

January at Gallery 10: "A Second Chance"

Out with the old, In with the new!  For the New Year, Gallery 10, 15 Eureka Street, Sutter Creek, is presenting a show of studio treasures for discerning collectors.  Our member and consignor artists are contributing paintings and artwork that has been hidden away for one reason or another.   Often artists find they pack up paintings when a competition is over, or a show is finished, and they forget they have them.  We’re asking our artists to find such treasures, so we might discover we have some masterpieces to display, and the prices will be attractive.

We will show paintings and other collectibles for the month of January, and will host a reception to celebrate the New Year on Saturday, January 6, 2-4 P.M.  All are welcome to stop by and enjoy refreshments and good company, and look at what we uncover to give a “second chance.”

Gallery 10 will be open Thursday through Monday, 11-4 during the winter months of January, February and March.  “A Second Chance will hang all of January.”

December at Sutter Creek Gallery: "Joyful Celebration"

For December, Sutter Creek Gallery is mounting a two-pronged membership show:  “Joyful Celebration” will feature holiday and winter scenes as well as affordable art gifts under $50, with many well under that price. The holidays are not that far away.  So instead of the usual sweater for Dad, or a blender for Mom, or box of candy for Aunt June, why not choose something unique at a reasonable price?

Since this is a group show, items from all of the gallery members will be highlighted: Paintings large and small in acrylics, watercolors, pastels, encaustics and oils. Collages and mixed media pieces from teeny-tiny to sizable.  Photographs, fabric wall hangings, hand painted glassware, ceramics, gourds, sculptures, and so much more.  Many of the artists offer prints and cards as well as small original artwork.  Sutter Creek Gallery is the place to shop for the holidays and beyond.

You are invited to the reception opening this show on Saturday, December 2, starting at 2 p.m.  Come in and meet many of the artists who will be on hand at the cooperative located in the heart of Sutter Creek at 35 Main Street.  The gallery is open daily (except Tuesday) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., our winter hours.

Let’s face it:  The holidays are coming way too soon.  But since they are, Sutter Creek Gallery has lots of gift suggestions. "Joyful Celebration,”will feature affordable art gifts, some whimsical, some practical, and all of them unique. Of course, we will also be displaying a selection of new winter and holiday paintings to celebrate the season. We’ll be decorating a tree with ornaments for sale and providing refreshments for the show’s opening. Come join us for some holiday cheer and meet many of the artists who have contributed their talents to this member show.

December at Gallery 10: “Fine Art in Small Packages" - A Collection of Small Works

Gallery 10 in Sutter Creek is offering a collection of Small Works by member and consignor artists for our December show. We are calling the show, “Fine Art in Small Packages.”

These paintings will be 12x16 inches are smaller, perfect for a holiday gift or a special corner in your home.  These pieces are offered as a way for customers and friends to collect fine art affordably and to share their love of art with others at the holidays. 

Paintings by Barbara Hoffman, Susan Hayne, Steve Holler, Lynn Slade, Stella Stevens, Sue Smith, Catherine Woodruff, Joanne Dedge, Ted Smith and Julie Trail will be available during this December show.

A reception will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2-5 P.M., as part of the monthly Amador Art Trek and the Holiday Open House in Sutter Creek. Gallery 10 is located at 15 Eureka Street, Sutter Creek.  During these holiday weeks we will be open every day except Tuesday, 11-5.  All are welcome at the reception.  The show will hang all of December.

Amador County Artists Association features Tri-County Wildlife at November's meeting

AMADOR COUNTY ARTISTS ASSOCIATION:

Wednesday, November 8 at 7PM

Jackson Senior Center

229 New York Ranch Road.

Instead of an artist demonstrating at the Artists Association meeting on November 8, Tri- County Wildlife will bring several owls and a hawk to be sketched and photographed. The tentative critter line-up includes a Swainson’s Hawk, a Great Horned Owl, a Screech Owl, a Saw-Whet Owl, and a Barn Owl.

The public is invited and refreshments will be served.
