ACAA Open Studios 2018 - September 8 & 9

In September, the Amador County Artists Association (ACAA) will be holding its Open Studios Art Show in one location. Instead of a driving tour around the county, this year artists will be centered at the American Legion Hall in Sutter Hill on Saturday, September 8, and Sunday, September 9.

Twenty artists will be on hand to not only show and sell art but also to demonstrate their craft at this free event. On Saturday, the exhibition will run from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A variety of artwork will be on display: paintings, photographs, jewelry and more. Visitors can choose among watercolors, acrylics, collages, charcoal and pastels. Some are representational and others abstract. Two media that may not be familiar are paintings using encaustics and alcohol ink.

Participating artists—and a few others—will be donating a piece of artwork or other item to be raffled off on the last day. Tickets are $1 each and all of the money raised from the raffle benefits ACAA scholarships and the spring high school student art show. Last year, two $1,200 scholarships were awarded.

Having Open Studios in one spot will allow residents and out-of-towners to see more work by more artists and maximize the number of people who can visit the exhibition. Entry into the hall is free so come enjoy the wealth of artistic talent Amador County has to offer. The ACAA, a non-profit organization, is an active membership group for visual artists and art supporters. Its mission is to promote and encourage the production, cultivation and appreciation of art. Sutter Creek Gallery: Cooperative Artists feature Amador County scenes in August

Customers often come into the gallery seeking local scenes to memorialize their visits to the area.  Many of our artists regularly produce such scenes with the creek that flows past our southern flank a long-time favorite. Instead of featuring one artist for the month of August, members of the cooperative have been invited to create artwork depicting locations around the county for a show entitled Impressions of Amador.

Some of the art may depict historic sites, such as the delicate pink and green watercolor rendering of the Chichizola Store by Mary Sue Palmquist. Photographer Michael Maloney has captured the moon ascending into a pink and blue sky over St. Sava Church. Silver Lake, another artistic favorite, will be represented by JoAnn Ogburn’s watercolor of the majestic Thunder Mountain towering over the lake.  At a recent plein air session at the Flower Farm, Wendy Rogers painted rows of multi-hued day lilies backstopped by oaks.  In a nod to whimsy, the quirky Ridge Road carnival rides and parade of animals is captured by Cynthia Dunn-Selph’s camera.  And, yes, we will have scenes of our creek—several versions, in fact—along with Nancy Robinson’s photographs that she calls Sutter Creek Treasures.

July ACAA meeting features renowned local photographer Larry Angier - Wed July 11

Larry's editorial work has appeared in National Geographic Traveler, Nevada, VIA, and RANGE. His commercial and industrial photography is used regularly by AT&T, Amador Council of Tourism, and Amador Vintners Association. His books include America's Heartland (2002), California 24/7, Nevada 24/7, Portrait of the West (2004), Cowboys and Country (2007), This Land of the Free (2008), Revisions: Mission San Juan Bautista (2013), The Sacred Expedition (2014).

His work is featured annually in the Browntrout line of calendars. Larry's fine-art photography has been exhibited throughout California and The West and in Belgrade, Serbia. His work is in many museum, corporate and private collections including the Museum of Northeast Nevada, University of the Pacific, The National Steinbeck Center, El Dorado Savings Bank, American Airlines and others. He will be sharing his expertise at the meeting on Wednesday, July 11 at 7pm, and visitors are welcome.

Gallery 10 Featured Artist for July: Marleen Olive

Marleen Olive is a new member of Gallery 10 and will be showing her work during July at the Gallery, 15 Eureka Street, Sutter Creek.  On July 7 there will be a reception in Marleen’s honor, 2-5 P.M.

Marleen moved to the foothills in 1999, having had fond memories of summers spent here as a child, camping and visiting her relatives, the Shaads.  Marleen has been actively involved in art throughout her life.  She received an AA degree in art and has taken numerous workshops to learn new skills.

Marleen has been intrigued by watercolor ever since she saw a painting 28 years ago that was so stunning she wanted to learn how to achieve such a result.  She took a workshop with Maxine Masterfield that introduced her to watercolor inks.  Maxine’s workshops showed Marleen exciting new methods of painting, and this introduction to abstract design was life changing for Marleen.  Continuing on her abstract adventure to this day, Marleen has studied with other artists using different water mediums, and she applies all she has learned in her many and varied styles of painting.

Marleen has won many awards for her paintings in both California and Oregon.  She has been a workshop instructor for children and adults in Crescent City, CA, and Brookings, OR.  She currently gives watercolor classes at the Upcountry Community Center in Pine Grove.

Sutter Creek Gallery's Featured Artist for July: Sandra Campbell

Sandra Campbell loves color and experimentation.  Her subjects include landscapes, florals, still life and animals.  Initially, she worked only with soft pastels but later branched out into collage and acrylics, often combining these into mixed media pieces.  A number of artworks are inspired by her local surroundings and travels as she always carry a camera. Skies and cloud formations are a favorite sight and inspired a series of pastel landscapes.  Campbell has been a member of Sutter Creek Gallery for the last five years and will be the featured artist in July.

For pastel artworks, Campbell works on sanded surfaces which allow for multiple layers of color as pastel painting is a process of layering on the surface rather than color mixing prior to application.  “What attracts me to this medium is the possibility for vibrant oranges, brilliant yellows, and intense purples and reds,” she explains.  “I’m most satisfied when I’ve captured the essence of a scene rather than the ‘reality’ and I’m working more and more to that end.” 

The artist’s collage and mixed media pieces are created on wood panels, canvasses, and watercolor paper.  Most are fabricated from rice, mulberry paper or other decorative paper, or archival tissue paper which has been textured and hand-painted with watercolors.  “I tend to go back and forth between the two media and feel freer working with collage.  I admire abstract painters but come closer to that technique with collage.

June at Gallery 10: Plein Air Artist Howard Rees

The Guest Artist at Gallery 10 for June will be Howard Rees.  Howard was a long time Amador County resident artist, living in several locations throughout Gold Country,  most recently Jackson.  He taught painting to many aspiring artists in our area, and continues to run workshops, en plein air in locations around the west, and indoors at the Amador Senior Center at regular intervals.

Gallery 10 is located at 15 Eureka Street, Sutter Creek.  Hours are 11-5 Thursday through Monday.  A reception will be held in Howard's honor on Saturday, June 2, 2018, 2-5 at the gallery and all are invited to browse, snack, and meet Howard Rees.

ACAA's June meeting features Sandra Campbell - Wed June 13

Pastel artist Sandra Campbell will be demonstrating at the Wednesday June 13 meeting of the Amador County Artists Association.  The business meeting will start at 7 p.m. in the Jackson Senior Center at 229 New York Ranch Road, with the demonstration to follow. Campbell works in soft pastels on sanded surfaces which allow for multiple layers of color.  Her subjects include landscapes, florals and animals.  She is a member of the Sierra Pastel Society, the Artists Association, and exhibits her work at the Sutter Creek Gallery.  The public is invited, and refreshments will be served.
