And don’t forget, as in previous years, there is a Fine Art Raffle that benefits ACAA’s student art scholarship program. Each participant donates a piece of art to the raffle and with this talented group of artists there is bound to be something you would like to take home while helping an art student further their studies.
This event, popular with locals and visitors alike, gives the public a chance to talk to artists about their work and creative process. Many artists will have demonstrations going throughout the weekend. There will be group locations featuring three to six artists, as well as private studios of working artists in Jackson, Sutter Creek, Amador City, Fiddletown, Pine Grove, and Pioneer. Original work will be for sale at all locations and many artists will also offer prints, cards, and other work related to their art.

Oil painter George Allen Durkee at AmadorArts Gallery in August
Before he moved to the foothills from San Francisco, artist George Allen Durkee was known as the extraordinary street painter who painted on-the-spot all the popular scenes of The City. Fast forward: when the Butte Fire whipped through the region September 10 of last year. Durkee lost everything, his home, studio and all of his works, some of which he had saved for personal reasons for over 40 years.
Art heals, and Durkee turned to creating new oil paintings, and starting August 6th you’ll be able to see some of the results, as the AmadorArts Gallery is featuring Durkee during the month of August. Of course he still has his famous signature style of “loose” oil painting, and you can learn about that while meeting Durkee at the First Saturday Art Trek on Saturday, August 6, in the AmadorArts Gallery at 11-A Randolph St, Sutter Creek. From 3:00 to 6:00 pm, a reception with appetizers and wine will honor this acclaimed artist.
The gallery also offers items such as jewelry by Karen Crane and assorted artists’ cards and small works of local scenes. Hours are 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday, and during weekdays, it’s best to call ahead, 267-9038. Visit www.amadorarts.org

Gallery 10 features Sue Smith as August's Featured Artist
Sue Smith was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She benefited from art instruction in school, drew from an early age and has always considered herself an artist. Sue majored in art at Ohio Wesleyan and has pursued it in one form or another all her life. She worked for many years as a draftsman, drawing house plans. Since she retired, Sue has been painting and drawing full time. Sue loves the foothill scenery and the critters, and she finds endless inspiration here.
Sue shows her work at Gallery 10, 15 Eureka Street, Sutter Creek, and will be the featured artist during the month of August. A reception will be held for Sue on Saturday, August 6, 2-5 P.M. at the gallery. All are welcome! Meet Sue and see what she’s been painting! Her show will hang all month. www.gallery10suttercreek.com
Sutter Creek Gallery hosts Watercolor Artist Judy Day as August's Featured Artist
Watercolor is the favorite medium of artist and teacher Judy Day, having explored a variety of media throughout her career. Most of the time she paints on traditional watercolor paper. More recently, Day has rendered paintings on newer surfaces such as Yupo and Aquabord, which provide a more fluid look. Her artwork, using all these surfaces, will be featured during the month of August at the Sutter Creek Gallery.
The artist loves the outdoors and has hiked and sketched in the high Sierras most of her life. “My paintings are inspired by my trips into the Sierras, vacations around the world, majestic landscapes, historical sites and almost everything in my neighborhood,” she explained. “I never know what will catch my eye and inspire me.” Often she paints on site in order to capture the light and shadows in the landscapes.
Day teaches art locally to both children and adults. During the summer she returns to her former Southern California home to direct a week-long children’s art camp. She has illustrated three educational children’s books as well as numerous posters and brochures. Each Christmas season, Day creates a three- by twelve-foot cut-paper banner for a church in No. Hollywood. She is the current president of the Amador County Artist Association.
Sutter Creek Gallery invites you to spend some time with Judy Day at a reception in her honor on Saturday, August 6, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., as part of the region’s First Saturday Art Trek. She is one of 25 artists exhibiting at the gallery located in the heart of Sutter Creek at 35 Main Street. The gallery is open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For additional information, call 209-267- 0228 or email suttercreekgallery@gmail.com
