January at Sutter Creek Gallery: Ree McLaughlan Brown

One thing you can expect from Ree McLaughlan Brown is that she will create something unexpected.  It might be a surprising painting surface or the materials she uses for her art.  McLaughlan Brown will be featured throughout the month of January at the Sutter Creek Gallery.  Due to the New Year holiday, the opening reception for her exhibition will be held Saturday, January 8, from 2 to 5 pm.

McLaughlan Brown paints expressive art in various media: alcohol ink and resin, encaustic wax, cold wax and oil, powders, gold leaf and acrylics. Unexpected surfaces include mineral paper, exotic wood, aluminum, glass, and everything in sight!  The most unusual surfaces are granite and marble on which a tractor blade carves rugged edges into the stone.  Then the artist uses a sandblaster, air, knives, and metal implements to move the paint, wax and inks which shape the art.  In addition to viewing her work at the gallery, it is also on display at local venues through the Art in Public Places program, sponsored by the Amador County Artists Association, and on her website, www.reemclaughlanbrown.ART.

Following retirement from 38 years in state service, McLaughlan Brown paints out of her rural art studio on five acres above Jackson.  In the past year, she painted daily and many of her new works are on exhibit.  She explains that motion dominates her work “which dances with uplifting emotion and vivid color.  My paintings speak to me and tell me their perfect titles.”  The artist is motivated to make a difference with her art by contributing artwork for local charitable events.

Sutter Creek Gallery invites you to meet Ree McLaughlan Brown on January 8 and to view her unexpected art at 40 Main Street, Sutter Creek.  Besides original paintings and photography, the gallery offers many affordable items including prints, cards, jewelry, pottery, gourds and fiber arts as well as custom matting and framing.  The gallery is open Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  For additional information, call 209-267-0228, email suttercreekgallery@gmail.com, or visit www.suttercreekgallery.com.

December at Sutter Creek Gallery: "The Inkist" Kirk Neiberger

Kirk Neiberger calls himself The Inkist because black ink is the primary medium for his art, although he might add a dab of color for a highlight.  As a young man, the artist fell in love with etchings but could not afford the necessary supplies.  So, he decided that the next best substitute was pen and ink drawing.  Upon retiring as a trial lawyer, he reconnected with this second love, creating art through his pen, ink and watercolor.  Neiberger will be featured at Sutter Creek Gallery during the month of December.  The exhibition opens on Saturday, December 4, with a reception from 2 to 5 p.m.

Most of Neiberger’s work is from his own photos, which he shoots at home and abroad during what he calls “photo safaris.”  He particularly loves to interpret local images and scenes, both historical and common place.  There is nothing more satisfying to the self-taught artist than having a stranger connect with one of his drawings to the point of buying it to take home or give as a gift.  “As I get older, I truly like the idea of my art getting out into the world and being enjoyed by others,” he said.  “It’s a legacy that will certainly outlive me, and I find that quite appealing.”

Since this is now holiday time, gallery artists have stocked the space with one-of-a-kind gift items for your loved ones.  Our artistic elves have also created seasonal cards, some sold in packs of four or more.  Plaid Friday, November 26, kicks off the holiday season locally, with merchants providing discounts for those wearing plaid.  Sutter Creek Gallery is offering a coupon for 20% off one framing order.  Wear your plaid when you visit us at 40 Main Street, Sutter Creek, to receive a coupon with no expiration date. In December we have added a day to accommodate shoppers, so we will now be open Wednesday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  For information about the gallery, call 209-267-0228, email suttercreekgallery@gmail.com, or visit our website, www.suttercreekgallery.com.

December at Sutter Creek Gallery: Gallery Artist Show

Having trouble coming up with the perfect gift for family and friends?  Come into Sutter Creek Gallery and browse one-of-a-kind art gifts at affordable prices.  For December, the gallery’s artists have been creating art pieces under $50, and many will be well below that price.  Paintings large and small in acrylics, watercolors, pastels, encaustics, and oils.  Collages and mixed media pieces from teeny-tiny to sizable.  Photographs, fabric wall hangings, hand-painted glassware, ceramics, gourds, sculptures, and so much more.

We’ve just lost our lease and have to vacate by early February. While we are looking for a new location, December and January will be the last months to see our recently refurbished gallery. And the perfect opportunity to pick up a memorable piece of art for those special people in your life as well as for yourself.

Our first Saturday reception will be held on Tuesday, December 7, starting at 2 p.m.  However, the selection of gifts will be available from December 1. Shop early and then return on the 7 to meet some of the artists and enjoy refreshments.  The cooperative, located in the heart of Sutter Creek at 35 Main Street, is open daily, except Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., our winter hours.  For additional information, call 209-267-0228, email suttercreekgallery@gmail.com or visit www.suttercreekgallery.com

December at Gallery 10: Characters in Abstract - Dave Manousos

My name is Dave Manousos. I am a fine artist living in Northern California Gold Country. Known for my bold brushwork and colorful interpretations of everyday life represented in the faces of my characters,

I consider my style modern with a pop twist.

The bright color scheme defines the pop aspect of my artwork; however, the expressions of my subjects often take the piece out of the tropey pop space and move it into a subversive and serious space.

Most of my character paintings have dual personalities competing in a single space. When viewing one of my paintings, take your hand and cover one side of the piece then do the same on the other side. You will see two different emotions or expressions existing cohesively in the same space.

Over the past 35 years I have experimented with many techniques of painting and illustrating. I have written and illustrated children’s books, worked in graphic design and continued to paint.

My current Big Eye Collection is a compilation of character paintings that combine both my illustration and painting techniques. As I apply layer after layer of color and texture, I see shapes and faces emerge from the canvas. I embrace the dominant figure and bring it to life.

Dave will show his work at Gallery 10, 15 Eureka St., Sutter Creek, during the month of December.  A reception will be held in Dave’s honor on Saturday, December 4, 2-5 P.M. Everyone is invited to meet Dave, see his amazing and original display of paintings, and enjoy a bite to eat.  The show will hang all of December.

November at Gallery 10: Anje Olmstead

Anje Olmstead has been an artist since childhood. She earned a degree in Interior design at American River College and went on to become a Certified Floral Designer. At age 35 she started doing “serious art.”  She entered county fair art shows, which led her to a contract designing Needlepoint.  Anje continued to find new and unusual ways to express herself artistically, including studying figure drawing at the Sacramento Fine Arts Center, where she met up with other artists. She began to explore paper mosaics. Anje’s mosaics won her several awards, including the “Best of Show” at the 75th Amador County Fair.

Anje continues to work in mosaic and recently was awarded a contract to do a portrait of Margaret Dalton for the Jackson Rancheria.  Currently, Anje is working on a mosaic mural for downtown Ione.  The mural will be 16 3x3 panels for a total of 48 linear feet, to be installed on the street and sidewalk sides of the half-wall in front of Ione City Hall.

Anje considers herself an artist in transition, planning new projects all the time. Now she is working on small stained glass paintings.

Gallery 10, at 15 Eureka St., Sutter Creek, is delighted to welcome Anje as a Guest Artist for November.  You will be treated to a variety of artworks highlighting several of Anje’s stops along her artistic journey.  A reception honoring Anje will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2-5 P.M. Everyone is invited to come, meet Anje, hear about her artistic adventures and enjoy a sip and a snack.  Anje’s show will hang all of November. The Gallery is open Thursday-Monday, 11-5.

November at Sutter Creek Gallery: Laurie Williams

Animals, both wild and domestic inspire Laurie Williams’ art.  “Since early childhood I have loved animals,” she said, “and have made them the subject of my paintings.”  Sutter Creek Gallery’s featured artist for November grew up on a ranch which allowed her the opportunity to learn about the goats, horses, deer and other creatures which are the focus of her art.  Each year at the county fair, Williams sits in the animal enclosures making life drawings, which are later turned into bold-colored acrylic paintings. Her show will open on Saturday, November 6, with a reception starting at 2 p.m.

Williams was inspired by the great colorists—Gauguin, Van Gogh, the Fauves and the German expressionists—while studying art at Sonoma and Humboldt State Universities and the San Francisco Art Institute.  Because of these influences, her paintings of animals are depicted realistically but often against abstract backgrounds that are richly colored and patterned. In addition to paintings, the show will feature painted clay necklaces of animals augmented with beads.

Sutter Creek Gallery invites you to meet Laurie Williams on November 6 and to view her vibrant creations at 40 Main Street, Sutter Creek.
